Protect Your Skin From Damage with Cosmetics

Cosmetics have been around for at least 6,000 years of mankind’s history. It has been a part of almost every human society. In fact, the first archeological evidence of man using cosmetics was found in Ancient Egypt dating back to 4000 BC. Ancient Greeks and Romans also used cosmetics. Although at that time, they did not know that the cosmetics that they used contained dangerous elements such as mercury and white lead.

Most modern day cosmetics have undergone extensive scientific tests in order to ensure that these products are safe for its users. Big cosmetic companies have a team of chemists and doctors who oversee all of these tests.

The manufacturing process of cosmetics may have improved greatly but the purpose or use of cosmetics is still basically the same: Cosmetics are substances used to enhance or protect the appearance or odor of human beings. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) defines a cosmetic as anything used for “cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering the appearance.” Some people think that cosmetics only refer to make-up. But make-up is just a part or subset of cosmetics. Make-up refers to products made up of a variety of colors that is intended to alter the appearance of the user. Other forms of cosmetics would be lotions, creams, perfumes, nail polish, hair sprays, gels, deodorants, shampoo, soap, bubble baths, etc.

Most people cannot go out without putting on any form of cosmetic. Even a person who does not wear any facial make-up puts on deodorant. Men use some form of hair product and put on cologne or perfume. The average US consumer uses about 10 cosmetic products every day. Most consumers use different brands, depending on their needs.  Some people cannot live without cosmetics. But unlike drugs that are used to treat disease or ease the pain of the human body (which can become addictive with repeated use), cosmetics do not change or affect the body’s structure or functions. The main ingredients of cosmetics are fragrances and preservatives.

Skin care also dates back to prehistoric times. During the time of the caveman however, skin care involved relieving pain brought on by man’s exposure to sun or severe weather conditions. At present, skin care products are mostly used to keep skin looking young and supple. Most of these products aim to delay the aging process.

Since ancient times, humans have been looking for ways to improve the way they look and feel. This need has led many to invent skin care products. With the vast array of products in the market, you can choose what cosmetics or skin care products you want to use. As with any product, give it a try, ask for samples. After all, you are buying these products to enhance your looks. So, you want to make sure that you buy products that are best for your skin.
